In 1855, at the age of 40, Bartholomew Schwendel, sailed to Americawith h is wife, Magdalen, two children, Barbara age 7, and Casper age2. Sailin g with them were his wife's relatives, George Solchenberger,age 35, his w ife Therese, age 24, and their 3 year old son, Mathius.Bartholomew's oc cupation was listed as farmer, and George was listedas a mason. All of t hem came from Bavaria. They sailed from Bremen,Germany on the ship D. H . Watjen, captained by Hermann Batjer andlanded in New York on 26 June 1 855. There were 404 steerage passengersand 10 Cabin passengers aboard. [The D. H. WATJEN, a 3-masted, square-rigged sailing ship, the firstof t hree vessels of this name, was built by the shipbuilder JohannLange, of V egesack/Grohn, for the Bremen firm of D. H.
