A bachelor, Bonerz "loved to go out to eat, loved crowds of people,loved to be the center of attention and loved a good party." Heenjoyed going to the opera in Chicago, and he had Melody Top ticketsfrom the day the theater opened in 1953 to when it closed in 1986. "Hehad a tailgate party every second Wednesday of whatever show was on.Actors, technicians and anyone else from the theater were welcome tothe outdoor parties, and many became part of a second family forBonerz. In February 1972, the pudgy balding Bonerz decided to celebrate his50th birthday with a wake. A lifelike image of him lay in a plainplywood coffin decorated with cucumbers, cauliflower, onions andmushrooms gathered from his grocery store. Nearly 500 people troopedinto a basement to pay their respects to the grocer. Friends - somekneeling - burst into laughter when Bonerz appeared from one side ofthe coffin and thanked them for coming. "Don't I look natural," hewould say. (from his obituary) [more to be added] He died of heart failure twenty years later.
